A Dakota High School student has involved himself in a fake report of a dark web shooting. The Macomb County Sheriff’s office reveals that the student has utilized the dark web to pay an individual for reporting a fake shooting incident at the school.
As per the press release from the Office of the Sheriff, the deputies had been sent to the school on the 19th of April. The deputies reached the venue around 1.30 pm after the dark web shooting incident. The dispatchers had received a call from a man claiming that he had been shot at his residence. He had provided the Dakota High School’s address where he had been shot.
The deputies said that after a couple of minutes, they had received another call through 911. The man on the other side of the call stated that he had been a staff member of the Dakota High School. He said to have seen a shooter on the school premises. Furthermore, he had mentioned that the shooter had fired shots outside his classroom. Additionally, he had provided the dispatch with his classroom number and personal details, which was later determined to be fake.
“This incident was taken as the highest priority and both the first responders and the school took swift actions to ensure the students and staff safety. I am grateful that this incident turned out to be an empty threat however; we take ‘swatting’ type calls very seriously. I want the community to be assured that we will continue to train and work with our schools to ensure safety for all,” said Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham in a press release.
The Sheriff’s Office had stated that the fake call had been treated as an active dark web shooting incident with the deputies, fire responding and EMS. However, there was no evidence of a shooting spotted on the premises.
An initial investigation had revealed that a student had arranged the calls by paying an individual on the dark web, asking him to make threats. The juvenile student is now expected to be charged on one count of fake threat of terrorism but at a later date. The investigation is still ongoing.
“The safety and security of our students and staff is our top priority. We applaud the quick response from the Macomb County Sheriff’s Department yesterday and the timely manner in which they are bringing this case to a resolution. This incident is a reminder that no threat, whether in word or deed, will be tolerated at Chippewa Valley Schools and all threats will be thoroughly investigated. We encourage parents to remind their children that threats of any kind can result in serious consequences, including disciplinary action at school as well as criminal penalties,” said Chippewa Valley Schools Superintendent Ron Roberts in a press release.
