An ex-employee of the Kantonspolizei (Canton of Schwyz) is currently facing charges for alleged dark web gun sale. Between the years 2012 and 2013, the suspect aged 57 years repeatedly sold ammunition and guns on an undisclosed dark web marketplace via a vendor account, the indictment stated.

A search was conducted on the accused’s house where the police had seized 80 firearms along with tens of thousands of ammunition. After the search, the police had kept the suspect under custody for two months before he was signed off for his temporary release.

The cops had come to know that the suspect had worked as the Head of the Logistics at the Schwyz cantonal police till April 2018. The Federal Office of Police (Fedpol) and the Zurich canton police had launched an investigation into his extracurricular activities before the accused had ceased to work for the police department.

While the accused was associated with the police department, he had allegedly abused his position in the department by purchasing ammunition off the dark web market worth 180,000 francs that he intended to conduct a dark web gun sale

However, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office said his abuse of his position with the police was “irrelevant in relation to the criminal offenses charged.”

The operation against the accused had stated that he had allegedly created legitimate purchase orders that his superiors accepted and signed off without questioning. Before filing the order, he had changed the number of items or the items in total.

Adding to the alleged weapon law violations, the suspect was accused of violating the official secrecy laws that were related to his position with the police. The Federal Prosecutor’s Office stated that the suspect had also worked with an accomplice in Germany and they allegedly continued the dark web gun sale together. The accused had also furnished his accomplice with the information on specific police investigations.

Currently, The Federal Office of Police and as well as the Zurich canton police are working together with law enforcement in Germany on the case. The suspect duo are still under police investigations in both the countries.
